How Can I Not? A Little Sentence for the Hard Moments

A gentle Soul Therapy reflection for the moments when anxiety, fear, worry, sadness, or old patterns rise — and you immediately start making yourself wrong for them.
There is a little sentence I use often.
In my own life.
In Soul Therapy sessions.
In the moments where a feeling rises and the mind immediately wants to make it wrong.
The sentence is:
How can I not?
Not in a defeated way.
Not in a “this is just how I am and nothing can change” way.
But in a loving, honest, human way.
How can I not feel anxious when I care so much?
How can I not feel overwhelmed when life has been so full?
How can I not reach for comfort when I am feeling stressed, worried, overwhelmed, or scared?
How can I not have old thoughts show up when something from the past has been touched?
There is something about that sentence that can help the body soften.
Even just a little.
When the Feeling Is Not the Only Thing You Are Carrying
Because so often, the feeling is not the only thing we are carrying.
We are also carrying the judgment about the feeling.
Fear comes up, and we judge ourselves for being afraid.
Anxiety comes up, and we make the anxiety the problem.
The old habit comes in, and we attack ourselves for needing comfort.
Sadness comes up, and we wonder why we are not over it yet.
Worry comes up, and we shame ourselves because we care so much.
The Second Layer Is Often the Heaviest
That second layer is heavy.
And “how can I not?” helps soften that layer.
It lets the human part of us have a little room.
It creates a little more space between the feeling and the story we start building around the feeling.
The feelings themselves are not always the problem.
Feelings arise.
Fear arises.
Worry arises.
Sadness arises.
Old thoughts arise.
How can they not?
The Feeling Can Be Here Without Running the Room
The deeper question is what happens next.
Do they move into the front row of your life and start deciding what everything means?
Do they become the voice you live from?
Do they become the place you make choices from?
Do they become proof that something is wrong with you?
Or can they be here without becoming the whole operating system?
Can the fear be here without running the room?
Can the worry be here without becoming the truth?
Can the old thought be here without becoming the story you obey?
What “How Can I Not?” Begins to Open
That is what “How can I not?” begins to open.
It normalizes.
It neutralizes.
It helps your body soften just enough to create a little more space.
Not so you can bypass what you feel.
But so you do not have to live every moment from inside the feeling.
It does not mean the fear gets to run the whole story.
It does not mean the worry becomes the truth.
It does not mean the old habit becomes the place you want to live.
It does not mean you stop choosing differently.
It simply means you stop making yourself wrong for having a human response.
Because how can you not?
With everything you have lived.
With how deeply you care.
With the old stories your body remembers.
With the patterns you learned to survive from.
With the tenderness you carry.
With the hard seasons you naturally move through because you are human.
With the capacity you actually have today.
How can you not have feelings?
How can you not have thoughts surface?
How can you not have moments where the old way reaches for you?
A Soul Therapy Practice for the Hard Moments
The work is not to punish yourself for what shows up.
The work is to notice what shows up without letting it take over your whole inner operating system.
To say:
Of course this is here.
How can it not be?
And also, what else is true?
What else is possible?
What does this part of me need right now?
What would more love, not less, look like in this moment?
That is where the space opens.
Not by forcing the feeling away.
Not by pretending you are fine.
Not by shaming yourself into being better.
But by meeting yourself honestly enough that your body no longer has to brace against your own judgment.
So if something old shows up…
If the worry comes.
If the fear comes.
If the sadness comes.
If the need for comfort comes.
If the thought comes that you wish you did not have.
Try meeting it with:
How can I not feel this?
Then let yourself pause.
Let your body soften where it can.
And ask:
What else is true here?
Because you are not your every thought.
You are not your every fear.
You are not your every old habit.
You are a human being learning how to meet yourself differently.
And that deserves more love, not less.
When You Are Ready to Understand the Deeper Pattern
This is the kind of work I hold inside Soul Therapy.
Helping you notice what is here without turning it into proof that something is wrong with you.
Helping you understand the deeper patterns, old stories, false truths, and tender places that keep getting activated in your life.
Not to fix you.
Not to shame the response.
But to create enough awareness, honesty, compassion, and love that something inside you has room to soften, shift, and be met differently.
If this opened something in you, the next step is not to judge yourself harder.
The next step is to understand what keeps rising, where it may have come from, and what it has been asking for beneath the surface.
That is the kind of work we gently follow inside the 6 Week Soul Therapy Awakening Sessions.
This private one-on-one Soul Therapy container is a beautiful place to begin if you are ready to understand the old stories, emotional patterns, false truths, and tender places that keep getting activated in your life.

A Question to Sit With
Where in your life are you blaming yourself for a human response that might actually make sense?
And what softens when you ask yourself:
How can I not feel __________, after all I have carried, lived, loved, endured, and experienced?
More love, not less. 🩷
With love,
